What to expect....
Individual Therapy
Many people come to therapy a little anxious about what to expect. Dr. Kaplan will help to set you at ease and answer any questions you may have regarding treatment, options, or appropriate referral, if necessary. Most difficulties people face can be helped with the appropriate therapeutic tools and a collaborative effort involving client and therapist. You will begin treatment by sharing information about yourself and your life experiences. From there, your goals for treatment will be discussed. This will help you and Dr. Kaplan to have a focus and direction for the work to come. Sessions are generally spent discussing what is bothering you, developing skills to cope better, learning to communicate more effectively, considering and implementing solutions, improving self-esteem, and helping you to feel better about yourself and your situation. Dr. Kaplan is always open to your feedback so please feel free to share with her your concerns, questions, or experiences of therapy.
Couples Therapy
For couples work, the pattern is much the same as for individual work. However, the assessment phase may last a bit longer. Generally, both parties in the couple attend the first session together and then each will meet individually with Dr. Kaplan for one session to further discuss the problems at hand as well as each partner's unique history. Following those sessions, the couple will return together to discuss the findings and treatment plan and to begin regular treatment sessions. Emotionally-Focused Therapy is the theoretical approach of Dr. Kaplan's couples work.
Treatments are flexible and tailor-made to address each individual or couple's specific needs. Your efforts in this partnership are crucial to creating success.
For questions about treatment or to schedule an appointment, please contact Dr. Kaplan via telephone or email. Dr. Kaplan will be happy to discuss treatment options with you.
