COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
Although Dr. Kaplan draws from a diverse collection of theoretical backgrounds, she operates primarily from a cognitive-behavioral (CBT) vantage point. CBT, a well-supported treatment approach, is a theory of psychology which focuses on how thoughts, behaviors, and feelings interact, with each one influencing the other, creating a functional or dysfunctional cycle. Treatment will help you examine how this cycle is operating for you and how to make changes which will improve your mood and help you to function better in multiple life settings.
COUPLES THERAPY
Dr. Kaplan's work with couples is informed through of her study of Gottman's therapy for couples, a research-based methodology that focuses on creating change in how couples communicate and interact to increase their understanding of one another and improve their ability to relate and communicate with one another. Dr. Kaplan will help you and your partner focus on your strengths as well as improve areas in which you and your partner tend to feel hurt, misunderstood, or angry. In treatment, we will work to understand what lies beneath the "argument" that repeats in your relationship. Couples often find that feelings of vulnerability regarding the self or the relationship trigger "fights" which appear to be about everyday things. As each partner learns to express feelings and vulnerabilities in a safe environment, they then become better able to support one another's emotional needs and relationships improve.
