Dr. Kaplan uses a number of empirically-developed and supportive techniques to help you better understand your current relationship dissatisfaction and improve the way you and your partner communicate, interact, and support one another. Clients often gain better insight into both themselves and their partner through the experience of therapy. Whether you have been married for years and years or are a young couple struggling to make your relationship function better, couples therapy can provide beneficial and lasting change.
Often couples complain that they have had the same fight over and over or fall into patterns of blame. Some couples feel they have been betrayed or hurt by their partner. Many couples have tried therapy in the past to no avail. Through use of the Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) model, you will learn to understand what underlies your negative relationship patterns and come to better understand your partner's experiences and interpretations of events. You will also gain insight into your own feelings and learn how to communicate this understanding more clearly to your partner, allowing for a more positive and supportive responsiveness between you and your partner. Your relationship, although currently struggling, also consists of strengths and we will identify and capitalize on the strengths you already have, further increasing the potential for positive interactions and regard for one another. Together, these factors will allow each of you to empathize with and support one another. As communication and understanding improve, you will interact more harmoniously, feel more connected and better understood by your partner, and enjoy closeness and intimacy in your relationship again.
Dr. Kaplan has completed the externship in Emotionally-Focused Therapy for Couples, the most effective treatment to date for couples, and she has also completed Level I Gottman training, a research-based methodology for working with couples. She is a member of the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally-Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) and a Member of the Philadelphia Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy.
